Are Travel Clubs Worth It?

Three numbers decide it: what the club costs, the trips you will really take, and the true saving on each.

Are travel clubs worth it? Sometimes, for some people. The answer depends on three numbers you can work out yourself: what the club costs over the years you will keep it, how many trips you will really take, and how much less each of those trips costs inside the club than outside it.

A Simple Break-Even Test

  • Step 1. Add up the full membership cost: joining fee, yearly fees for the years you expect to stay, and any financing charges.
  • Step 2. List the trips you are confident you will take, not the ones in the brochure.
  • Step 3. For each trip, get two totals for the same dates: the club price and the best price outside the club, including taxes and fees both ways.
  • Step 4. Add up the savings. If they comfortably exceed the membership cost, the club may be worth it to you. If not, it is not.

Be strict about Step 3. Comparing a club rate with a hotel’s highest published rate flatters the club. Compare it with what you would actually pay.

When a Club Tends to Make Sense, and When It Does Not

More likely worth itLess likely worth it
You already hold the membership (warehouse or auto club) and pay nothing extra to use its travel serviceYou would be paying a large upfront fee for access you have not tested
You travel often, with flexible dates, to places the club covers wellYou travel once a year, in school holidays, when availability is tightest
You can cancel easily if it does not suit youThe contract runs for years and is hard or costly to exit
The benefits are listed in writing with clear conditionsThe benefits rely on spoken promises or “today only” extras

A great resort is not the same thing as a great membership.

The Alternative Most People Forget

A good travel specialist does the comparing for you without a membership fee, and is paid mainly by the travel suppliers. If you are curious how that side of the business works, our sister site Be a Travel Agent explains it. For your own trip, ask through the Official Travel Directory and compare the quote with any club offer you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are travel clubs worth it for seniors?

The same test applies at any age: price your real trips inside and outside the club. Older travelers are often targeted with free-trip presentations, so the warning signs on our scam page are worth reading first.

How many trips do I need to take for a club to pay off?

It depends entirely on the fee and on the real saving per trip, which is why we suggest working it out with your own numbers rather than trusting a sales example.
